Fire marshal investigating after fire in abandoned building on 51 Street

An investigation is underway after a fire was found in an abandoned building on Tuesday evening

Just before 10:30 p.m. on July 31, the City of Yellowknife Fire Division (YKFD) received a call from a bystander, calling from the Northern Lites Motel, of a fire in a building up from the bowling alley on 52nd St.
Municipal Enforcement Officers were first on scene and searched the area for signs of smoke and fire.

Upon arrival, YKFD Incident Command noticed a red glow behind the cracked front windows of an abandoned building.  During a walk around the building, it was noted that the back door was open.  All utilities to the building had been disconnected.

The window was removed, and the fire was extinguished with the compressed air/foam (CAF) system.

No one was in the building at the time and the fire was contained to a small section of the front room.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.

This is the second fire in an abandoned building this summer.
