Fort Smith RCMP responded to a complaint from a local who discovered a small quantity of blasting caps in their home on Sunday.

These types of explosives are commonly used in mining and road construction and were found while the homeowner was packing up their house in preparation for a move.

Fort Smith RCMP contacted the K Division Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) in Edmonton who flew to the community that evening. The devices were seized by EDU and stored at the detachment overnight, transported to a local firearms range the next morning and detonated.

“There was no concern for public safety throughout this incident,” the RCMP news release states, adding that the homeowner did the right thing in contacting the police upon finding the explosives.

“These types of devices are not uncommon in the North where there is a fair bit of mining and construction activity and would encourage anyone who happens upon them to respond in the same manner and contact your local detachment.”
