Outgoing Yellowknife mayor lands executive director position

Yellowknife’s outgoing mayor has already found a new job. The Arctic Energy Alliance Board of Directors says Mark Heyck will be its new Executive Director.

The Arctic Energy Alliance is a not-for-profit society that aims to help others reduce the cost and environmental impact of energy and utility services in the Northwest Territories. It has a yearly budget of roughly $3 million, mostly funded by the territorial government.

“We are excited to have Mr. Heyck as the incoming Executive Director of the Arctic Energy Alliance,” says Board President John Vandenberg. “Mark brings his years of leadership experience as Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for the City of Yellowknife since 2003 to the position.”

Heyck is slated to start Tuesday, September 11th, a little over a month before the Yellowknife municipal election. He announced in February 2018 that he would not be running for re-election, after serving as mayor since 2012.

At the time, Heyck said he was eager to spend more time with his family after nearly 15 years on Yellowknife city council. Before his two terms as mayor, he served as deputy mayor for six years and was first elected to city council in 2003.
