Around 5 a.m. this morning, Yellowknife RCMP responded to a call about a fire at Rockhill Apartments on 54 Avenue.

The building houses the YWCA office and transitional housing facility, a 33 unit apartment building housing families who cannot access public or market housing.

The organization is currently focusing on re-housing families and is asking for monetary donations only as they cannot currently store clothing donations.

RCMP officers are currently on the scene with City of Yellowknife Fire Division, Emergency Medical Response Team, Municipal Enforcement Division and Public Works.

Nearby buildings have been evacuated and RCMP are asking the public to avoid the area of 54th Avenue between 49th Street and 52nd Street while efforts to put the fire out continue.

No further details are available at this time.
