NWT Diamond Mines donate $45,000 to Rockhill fire fund

Three Northwest Territories Diamond Mines have banded together to donate $45,000 to support the victims of Tuesday morning’s fire at Rockhill Apartments.

After 33 families were displaced in the fire, De Beers Canada, Rio Tinto and Dominion Diamond Mines have each pledged $15,000 for the Rockhill fire fund.

“Dominion Diamond Mines is pleased to provide support in response to yesterday’s sad event, which has impacted so many families,” says Patrick Evans, Chief Executive Officer of Dominion Diamond Mines ULC in a statement on Wednesday.

“As is often the case in the North, when there are difficult times, the community pulls together. It is in that spirit we are proud to work with our colleagues at the other diamond mines to provide this funding. Our hearts go out to the families who were affected and the staff as they deal with this difficult situation. ”

The funds will be delivered to the YWCA Yellowknife, which operated the 33-unit transitional housing facility on 54 Avenue before it burned down early yesterday morning.
