NWT Alert Ready to live test on Wednesday

A public alert system will be live testing in the NWT. On Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at 1:55 p.m., the GNWT will issue a live test of NWT Alert Ready, the Northwest Territories public alerting system.

Residents of the NWT may see and hear the public alert test on wireless devices, radio stations and cable networks across the NWT.

In a press release, the GNWT states that NWT Alert Ready is being developed to provide public alerts to NWT residents during emergencies and disasters and is part of the national public alerting system “Alert Ready”. The system is currently under development with the hope that full implementation happens in 2019.

GNWT notes that not all residents will receive the test alert on their wireless device. This may occur for a variety of reasons, including device compatibility, connection to an LTE network, cell tower coverage, device software and settings.

The territorial government suggests that people check their device compatibility on their wireless service provider’s website, and also ensure that their device has the latest software update installed. It says that Alert Ready is designed to give critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians through television, radio and wireless devices.

The Alert Ready system is developed in partnership with federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, Environment Canada and the broadcast industry. GNWT says this is to ensure you receive alerts immediately and know when to take action to keep yourself and your family safe.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has set the target that 100% of new devices currently available for sale in Canada must be compatible with Alert Ready by April 2019.
