The Fort Liard RCMP has been active this past week as they charged a woman with impaired driving as well as making a number of alcohol seizures.
The RCMP intercepted three vehicles with shipments of alcohol heading towards the community of Fort Liard as part of National Safe Driving Week and Operation Gingerbread, which carries on throughout the month of December.
Police conducted traffic check stops and seized a total of 67 – 375 ml bottles and 7 – 750 ml bottles of alcohol, along with 12 cans of beer and sixty-seven grams of marijuana, which is over the legal limit allowed for possession.
Three males and three females from Fort Liard were implicated in the seizures and charges are pending.
Fort Liard is a restricted community and the quantity of liquor that a person may possess or bring over the border from B.C. is strictly limited by the Northwest Territories Liquor Act.
Fort Liard RCMP reminds the public that the actions of a few do not reflect the community as a whole. The RCMP also states that people who are willing to take the risk and violate the Liquor Restrictions should expect to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The restrictions are in place to protect the residents of the community says Marie York-Condon, NT RCMP Media Relations.
“Seizures such as these assist the police in reducing the harm associated with substance abuse”.
