External investigation into Yellowknife RCMP ends

Northwest Territories RCMP has concluded their external investigation into an in-custody injury in the Yellowknife Detachment. The investigation was conducted by the Edmonton Police Services.

On July 18th, 2017 a male prisoner was taken by officers from the Yellowknife RCMP cell block to Stanton Territorial Hospital for treatment. The injuries occurred while he was being taken into custody as the man became uncooperative and resisted efforts to put him into a cell block. The injuries were not life threatening, but the male had fractured two ribs during the incident. The man was charged with assaulting a police officer, uttering threats and breach of probation.

The external investigation ordered by Northwest Territories RCMP is a standard policy in relation to an in-custody injury. Edmonton Police Services conducted a thorough and independent investigation into the in-custody injury. They concluded that the officers were acting properly in the execution of their duties. Superintendent Jones, Criminal Operations Officer in Charge reviewed and agreed with the findings.
