Walk to Tuk 2019 might just be the way for you to start the new year off on the right foot. Community members, schools, and workplaces can form teams and walk the distance of the Big River from Fort Providence to Tuktoyaktuk.

Each team will do their best to walk a total of 1658 km between January 2nd to February 28th.

So far there are 2565 participants on 216 teams from 23 communities. Last year, 28 communities took part in Walk to Tuk.

As for a few reasons to participate in the walk:

  • It is a fun, free activity open to anyone.
  • It will help you stay active when you need it most, during the coldest and darkest months of the year. Participants provide social support and encouragement to their team members to get and stay active.
  • It is a team activity that encourages all participants, from the youngest to the oldest, to work together towards a common goal.
  • It is easy to track and watch your team progress along the river.
  • Prizes are awarded to individuals, teams, and team captains, both at the end of the challenge and each week.
  • Team captains are provided with lots of support throughout the entire challenge.
  • Teams get to choose their own great team name.
  • It is accessible. You don’t need any special equipment. Just a good pair of boots or shoes and warm clothes.
  • It is flexible. You can count any activity that is continuous and vigorous intensity, including swimming, biking, and cross-country skiing, toward your weekly totals.
  • It promotes wellness. Walking has lots of physical and mental health benefits including better focus, lower blood pressure and stress levels, and improved heart and lung health.
  • Walking is great for kids as well. It can improve their concentration, supports their cognitive development, and gets them outside in the fresh air.
  • It is a great way to experience the beautiful outdoor spaces in your community.

The challenge officially started on January 2nd but it is not too late to sign up as registration is open until January 14th. Click here to register.
