Extreme Cold Warning in effect for Yellowknife

Very cold wind chills are expected to hit Yellowknife throughout the day.

Clear skies and an arctic ridge have generated extreme cold wind chills near -50 this morning. Extreme cold conditions will continue into Thursday morning.

Environment Canada notes that extreme cold puts everyone at risk and advises Yellowknifers to dress warmly.

“Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up.”

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated health risk such as frostbite and hypothermia.

Yellowknifers are advised to keep emergency supplies in your vehicles such as extra blankets and jumper cables.
