“We need justice for Hay River”: Aunt of Alex Norwegian

The aunt and godmother of 25-year-old Alex Norwegian said a light sentence for those charged in his murder would not help the community.

“We need justice for Hay River,” she says, adding a ‘slap on the wrist’ will not achieve this.

Steen says the community is riddled with crime, referencing the murder of RCMP Const. Christopher Worden in 2007. Steen spoke Friday in Yellowknife Territorial Court, she is one of several family members giving victim impact statements ahead of the sentencing of 25-year-old Sasha Cayen.

Cayen is of one of four people charged after Norwegian’s body was found December 28th in the Sandy Creek area of Hay River. Tyler Cayen was sentenced to two years less a day for accessory to manslaughter Thursday. Levi Cayen and James Thomas will both be tried for first-degree murder.

Sasha Cayen is set to be sentenced for manslaughter Friday afternoon.
