The City of Yellowknife is looking for the public to help them plan the future look of Yellowknife land. The city, in partnership with Dillon Consulting Limited is undertaking a review to determine how land will be used for the next 10 years. This review is mandated by territorial legislation which requires the City to review its Community Plan every eight years.

Residents are invited to express their interest in joining a focus group to help create a vision for land use planning within the city. Each focus group will discuss, debate and provide ideas related to key planning priorities of the community. There are 15 spots available for each focus group discussion; which will take place March 5 to 8 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Explorer Hotel.

Land Use Planning discussion topics include:

  • Tourism including knowledge of unique and special areas in Yellowknife
  • Location for future recreation, cultural and education facilities
  • Passive recreation (off-leash dog areas)
  • Parks, trails and open spaces
  • Capital Area Planning
  • Bristol Pit
  • Tommy Forrest, Parker Park and the Con Mine Site
  • Kennels, animal uses, agricultural combined with residential uses
  • Tiny homes, density and urban growth
  • Trucked services and other municipal services
  • Giant Mine Remediation Project
  • Municipal boundary
  • Akaitcho Interim Land Withdrawal
  • Land requests to the Territorial Government.

An open session for the public is scheduled on Wednesday March 6 from 9 a.m. 12 p.m. and again on Thursday March 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Council Chamber at City Hall for residents to voice their opinion who cannot participate in a focus group.

Mayor Alty says the focus groups gives the community, residential and business, an opportunity to directly provide input on the city’s plan for the next 10 years.

“We want to hear how Yellowknifers envision the future of our city. One of the objectives of the process is to hear as many viewpoints as possible,”
