A Canadian hockey institution may be making its way to Yellowknife in 2020.
Mayor Rebecca Alty told MyYellowknifeNow the city was approached by Scotiabank’s Hockey Day in Canada in December with an offer.
“They’d like to host the 2020 edition, which will be the 20th anniversary of Hockey Day in Canada, here in Yellowknife. So we’ll be discussing that as council.”
City staff will work with organizers to set up the event, which includes hockey clinics, games, music, art and culture.
If Hockey Night in Canada hosts Ron MacLean and Don Cherry are still in their seats in 2020, they along with other NHL alumni and possibly even the Stanley Cup itself will visit the community.
The event is a full-day national broadcast which features hockey action by all NHL teams. Alty says she sees it as a good idea for tourism and economic development, as well as for the community of hockey lovers in the city.
“I do think it’s important it’s a good opportunity to raise our profile on a national (level),” she says. “It is on (Sportsnet) and we get two commercial spots to showcase Yellowknife.”
Mayor and council will discuss the idea at a committee meeting Monday at noon.
