Update: Engine failure cause of Buffalo Airways DC-3 landing off runway

The two crew aboard a Buffalo Airways flight are safe after making a landing off of a Hay River airport runway Friday morning.

The DC-3 C-GJKM took off from Hay River’s Merlyn Carter airport at 7:41 a.m. Friday morning bound for Yellowknife.

According to communications director Katherine Defosse, the plane then experienced a mechanical issue. “The airplane landed off the airport runway, all crew onboard are safe,” a statement from the airline read.

The Transportation Safety Board confirms the mechanical issue was an engine failure that happened shortly after take off. The TSB says they have not decided whether they will be deploying investigators, they will inform the public of this decision shortly via their Twitter page.

Information about exactly where the plane landed has not been released. The information received by the TSB is that the plane landed 6 miles southeast of the airport.
