Over $16,500 was raised by Yellowknife teams at this weekend’s Gumboot Rally, who also took the Star Wars theme very seriously.

The annual fundraiser for the Yellowknife Association for Community Living was held this year on May 4th, hence the intergalactic theme. Thirteen teams, in total 65 participants, took part starting with fundraising for months and then taking part in gumboot-themed challenges in the YK1 parking lot Saturday.

“What a fabulous morning,” says Tony Florio, YKACL board member. “There was so much enthusiasm and great fun. It is wonderful to see so many children participating.”

Teams included JH Sissons School (Queen Amadila and the Sissons Sisters), St. Joseph School (Yo Da Bomb!), St. Patrick High School (May the Luck of the Irish be With You!) 100.1 Moose FM (Scruffy-looking Moose Herders), CBC North (CBC-3P0s), Mackenzie Valley Review Board (Dagobah Swampers), GNWT employees (Beyond a Reasonable Gumboot, Who’s Your Daddy). The RCMP took part, as did teams of families and friends (The Gumboot Jedis, Tai Chi Tigers, The Ewoks, The Super Stars).

Top fundraisers, and top performers in the gumboot challenges, walked away with prizes from Quality Furniture and Canadian North. They included Denise Anderson, top fundraiser, followed by Christine MacDonald as the second highest fundraiser. The top team for fundraising was Beyond a Reasonable Gumboot.
