Service update as new Stanton hospital opens Sunday

The new Stanton Territorial Hospital opens May 26th and some services will be reduced or temporarily unavailable during the changeover.

Services including ambulatory care, endoscopy, CT scans, mammography and rehabilitation will be temporarily unavailable for some days this week. From May 21 to June 2 only emergency surgeries will be performed. The renewal project team says services will be up and running regularly by June 10.

Dialysis, medical daycare including chemotherapy and inpatient and extended care continue as usual.

Emergency patients and women in labour will access the new hospital as of 6 a.m. May 26th, before this they will be seen at the existing hospital.

Visiting hours will start at the new hospital a day after the move, visitors can come to the new hospital May 27th from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The hospital is located at 548 Byrne Road, directly across from the existing hospital.

Three new fires were reported in the territory as the wildfire on the northeastern side of Wood Buffalo remains over 52,000 hectares in size. More than 200 personnel and 13 helicopters were deployed in response to the fire over the weekend. While the wildfire remains out of control, officials reported that containment efforts have progressed well on all sides of the wildfire.

Advocates, allies from across N.W.T. march for Frank Gruben and Pride in Ft Smith

The Fort Smith community was joined by allies from Aklavik, Inuvik and Yellowknife for Frank Gruben and Pride this weekend. Ryker Jaxson Lonehardt, who is the festival’s main organizer, began the event in Gruben’s name three years ago after hearing that he was missing. Gruben moved to Fort Smith for studies and was a member of the close-knit 2SLGBTQ1A+ community there. He was was last seen on May 6 2023 and was just 30 years old at the time of his disappearance.
