$75 million in highway improvements underway in the NWT

NWT residents and visitors should expect another busy highway construction season this summer as over $75 million in highway improvement projects have been planned.

During construction season, drivers are asked to slow down in construction zones, obey all signage and traffic control personnel, and plan ahead for added travel time.

Improvements will be made to eight highways, two bridges, five access roads, and one pedestrian path. These construction projects are “part of the GNWT’s mandate commitment to invest in transportation infrastructure across the territory.”

The construction projects will focus on:

  • Highway 1 will be reconstructed from kilometre 207 – 222. A culvert will also be repaired at kilometre 510.6.
  • Highway 3 will be repaired and rehabilitated from kilometre 244.1 – 256.3 and will also receive a chip seal overlay from kilometre 124 – 164.
  • Highway 4 will be reconstructed from kilometre 51.12 – 54.60.
  • Highway 5 will receive a chip seal overlay from kilometres 24 – 54 and 211 – 266.
  • Highway 6 will receive a chip seal overlay from kilometre 0 – 42 and kilometre 66 – 90.
  • Highway 7 is expected to be reconstructed from kilometre 20 – 23.
  • Highway 8 will be reconstructed from kilometre 148 – 150 and a culvert will be replaced at kilometres 147 and 266.1.
  • Highway 10 – A culvert will be replaced at kilometre 131.2.
  • The pedestrian trail in Yellowknife to the Niven Lake substation will be paved.
  • The Inuvik Airport Access Road will be reconstructed from kilometre 259.4 – 269.
  • The Hay River Reserve Road will receive a chip seal overlay from kilometre 0 – 12. Surface repairs will also be carried out.
  • The Rae Access Road is expected to be upgraded from kilometre 0 – 10.
  • A section of the Jean Marie River access road will be resurfaced with surfacing gravel.
  • Canyon Creek Access Road – Erosion and sediment control to be carried out.
  • The Hay River to Pine Point Bridge is undergoing rehabilitation until October 31st,.
  • Mackenzie Valley Winter Road – The Blackwater Bridge Bridge approaches will be improved.
