NWT Foster Family Coalition head named finalist for national award

Tammy Roberts, Executive Director of the Foster Family Coalition of the NWT was nominated for the Lynn Factor Stand Up for Kids National Award. The Award is part of the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada’s national campaign for ‘child welfare mobilizing Canadians who want to help change the future for the country’s most at-risk children and youth.’

Roberts was announced as one of the six finalists whose dedication has made a lasting mark on the child welfare landscape. A news release by the foundation states the award recipient will receive a $50,000 grant to give to an organization in Canada to enable/or advance child welfare initiatives. The other five finalists will each have the opportunity to direct a $5000 grant.

Roberts has spent 28 years serving kids at risk in the NWT and has been providing emergency and long term care to 250 NWT foster children and teens with mild to extreme learning and behavioural challenges. She has been the Executive Director of the Foster Family Coalition of the NWT since 2009.

She facilitates training for foster/ adoptive families and social workers as well as leading an FASD Resource Centre, focused on a pilot project that serves the needs of youths who have either been prenatally exposed to alcohol, are transitioning out of the foster care system or have recently aged out of care.

Her commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable children has previously been recognized as she received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.

The award recipient will be announced at the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada’s Stand Up for Kids Awards Night in Toronto on September 11th.
