Former cabinet minister Dave Ramsay to run for Frame Lake seat

Dave Ramsay will compete against incumbent Kevin O’Reilly for the position of MLA for Frame Lake this fall.

A former MLA and cabinet member, Ramsay announced his candidacy Wednesday, stating the territory could not afford ‘four more years of nothingness.’

Ramsay served three terms before being defeated in the 2015 election by sitting MLA for Kam Lake Kieron Testart. He also held several cabinet positions including Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, Justice and Transportation.

In his announcement Wednesday, Ramsay states he had not planned on running again but ‘with property values falling, cost of living increasing and seemingly no one paying attention to the gravity of mine closures we can not afford four more years of nothingness.’

O’Reilly was critical of Ramsay’s decision to join Fortune Minerals’ board of directors six months after leaving office. At the time the territory’s Conflict of Interest Comissioner approved the appointment and Ramsay defended it, telling CBC he had no ‘significant dealings’ with Fortune during his time as minister.

MyYellowknifeNow has reached out to Ramsay for an interview. This story will be updated as we hear back.
