Engineer and Yellowknife resident Katrina Nokelby has announced she intends to run for the seat of MLA for Great Slave.

The Great Slave riding is currently held by government house leader and Minister of Health and Social Services, Seniors, Persons with Disabilities and the Public Utilities Board Glen Abernethy. Nockelby says her platform emphasizes building the economy through ‘sustainable exploration and development’ with meaningful consultation with those who are affected. Building infrastructure to respond to climate change is also a focus.

Nokelby has been a geological engineer in the North since 2006, including work on the Tibbitt to Contwoyto winter road and Giant Mine. She specializes in contaminated site and environmental assessment and has worked at sites across the Northern territories.

“As a woman in engineering, I feel I bring a diverse voice and unique skill set to the assembly that isn’t currently being represented,” she states. “I am committed to focusing my efforts on building the economy while maintaining high standards of sustainability and environmental protection.”

From her experience as a director with the YWCA-NWT, Nockelby states ‘cost of living, addictions and homelessness’ need to be priorities for the next territorial government.
