Fire outside of Yellowknife continuing to grow

The wildfire located about 41 km away from Yellowknife has grown almost 1,000 hectares in the last 36 hours and is now 3,350 hectares in size. NWT Fire says the fire is not an immediate threat to the city.

A fire behaviour analyst from Ontario arrived at the fire yesterday and twenty more Ontario firefighters will arrive later in the week to assist in the fire suppression efforts.

Ground crews are working on direct suppression on the east side of the fire. Burn operations to reduce available fuels and prevent fire growth to the east were planned again for yesterday.

Record temperatures are continuing to be forecast across the North Slave Region and the fire danger rating remains extreme as several wildfires have popped up in the region over the past few days.
