OpenNWT announces launch of new election information website

As part of efforts to provide better access to information on territorial election candidates, OpenNWT has launched a new website.

OpenNWT Inc. is a non-profit organization founded by NWT resident David Wasylciw in 2014.

“Making information on candidates easily accessible is an important part of the election,” Wasylciw said. “Residents shouldn’t have to search all over to find links, news or other contact information for candidates.”

NWTElection.ca is a community-driven election website that includes plain language, election information, candidate information, including contact information, websites, social media accounts and news tracking, Wasylciw says.

According to Wasylciw throughout the day nwtelection.ca electronically collects and collates news published by the
North’s news media sources including, Moose FM, Cabin Radio, CKLB, NNSL and CBC North collecting it in a single place organized by candidates and ridings to make it easier for voters to find the news most relevant to them.

After the election, collected data will be archived and made accessible online as an open data dataset, Wasylciw says.

Developed in partnership with Open Democracy Manitoba (www.opendemocracymanitoba.ca), this new platform makes finding information on territorial candidates easier, Wasylciw stated.

OpenNWT makes our government more open and accountable through advocacy and by developing tools that make public information more accessible, Wasylciw says.

Other projects by OpenNWT include OpenAssembly (hansard.opennwt.ca), and NWT Contracts (contracts.opennwt.ca).
