Revised dog by-law aims to keep city clear of pet feces

Yellowknife, NWT – The mayor of Yellowknife says the city is doing what it can to keep the ground free of dog feces.

Mark Heyck says councillors revised the city’s dog by-law last fall to include stricter policies when it comes to cleaning up after your canine.

Heyck says dog owners are now also responsible for ensuring their own property is void of feces.

“We strengthened some provisions not just in public areas but also in terms of cleaning up one’s own property. That’s been an issue at times with some people’s neighbours letting it accumulate to the point where it becomes a public health matter.”

Heyck says the city will be installing 20 more garbage receptacles throughout the city this year for dog owners to deposit their pet’s waste.

Anyone caught without the suitable means to remove dog feces, or caught leaving it behind, could be fined up to a hundred dollars.
