Breakup season in Hay River looks ‘uneventful’ so far

Hay River residents can expect a quiet breakup season, according to the latest forecast.

Town fire chief Ross Potter’s April 20 update says “things are progressing very slowly” and there is no apparent cause for concern.

Breakup has, in the past, resulted in severe floods in the area.

However, Potter wrote: “At this point in time, all looks very good for an uneventful 2015 breakup.”

Water and snow levels are at or below average compared to previous years, he added, while ice levels are “a little thinner than normal” thanks to comparatively warm winter temperatures.
