Dene Nation, DFO and Canadian Coast Guard commence work to develop Arctic Region

The Dene Nation and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard have signed a contribution agreement.

‘The recently signed contribution agreement between Dene Nation and the Canadian Coast Guard is a step in the direction of finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that the parties have been working towards for several months,” Dene National Chief Norman Yakeleya said. “The development of the ArcticRegion has the potential for the Government of Canada to work jointly with the Dene, Inuvialuit and Inuit to co-develop and co-manage programs, policy and regulations for fisheries and coast guard matters within our homelands.”

The agreement will assist the Dene Nation with building capacity by providing funds to hire a Fisheries Coordinator who will work to develop the Dene position on the new Arctic Region announced by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard during 2018.
