YK1 names Ed Lippert as new assistant superintendent

Yellowknife Education District No. 1 will welcome a new assistant superintendent of schools this summer.

Earlier this week, the school board announced that Edward Lippert, the current principal of Sir John Franklin High School, will assume the position on August 1.

“I see this appointment as kind of a natural progression of my current role as principal at Sir John Franklin,” Lippert told Moose FM.

“I have a familiarity with the curriculum, the schools at YK1 and the community of Yellowknife.

“My own children attended and graduated from YK1 schools so I have a really strong belief in what we do and the direction we’re heading.”

In a statement, YK1 Superintendent Metro Huculak said the board conducted a Canada-wide search to fill the position.

Lippert, who’s been with the school board for 18 years, spent time as a teacher, department head and vice principal before assuming his current role as principal in 2011.

He told Moose FM he’s looking forward to some of the challenges that lie ahead.

“Yk1 has a very long tradition of excellence in areas like academic achievement, fine arts, language instruction and athletics so I see this as a challenge to work with our schools and with our community to not only maintain this tradition but to improve upon it.

“Because I live here in the community and because my children are from the YK1 system, I have a strong dedication to continue to work with our children in our community.

“I enjoyed my time in the classroom so it’s kind of bittersweet that I’m leaving the classroom but I’m really looking forward to the challenges ahead working with entire school district.”
