Police say charges are pending after a visitor passed weed to an inmate at Yellowknife’s North Slave Correctional Centre.
According to an RCMP report, guards at the jail “noticed suspicious activity during a visit between a female visitor and a male inmate” on the evening of Wednesday, May 13.
Police were called and found both the inmate and his visitor to be in possession of marijuana.
Trafficking and possession charges are pending.
In a report published in March, Canada’s auditor general found there had been 251 incidents involving contraband at the North Slave Correctional Centre in the two fiscal years between 2012 and 2014 – averaging 10 incidents per month.
The report concluded that the NWT’s corrections service did not “adequately monitor” the control of contraband.

However, the auditor general’s report added that corrections staff did “monitor and suspend … visitors who have been involved in bringing contraband into facilities”.
The Department of Justice, in the wake of the report, promised to review its directives and orders related to contraband at corrections facilities by the fall of this year.
“A tracking process for contraband will be developed, implemented, and managed within each facility,” the department pledged.
