Waterfront attendants to supervise Fred Henne beach this summer

Yellowknife, NWT – There will be no lifeguards on the beach at Fred Henne Territorial Park this summer.

The minister responsible for beach safety in the Northwest Territories, David Ramsay, confirmed that to CJCD News Wednesday afternoon.

Ramsay, the minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment explains how that decision was arrived at.

“We issued an RFP looking for lifeguard services but we didn’t get any responses. I made a commitment to ensure there would be supervision at that beach and the next thing that was available to us was a campaign to get waterfront attendants on the beach so we can get that educational component as well as eyes and ears on the beach.”

The issue of beach safety at Fred Henne has been in the news since last summer.

That’s when seven-year-old Lodune Shelley drowned at the unsupervised beach.

Although not a full lifeguarding service, Ramsay says waterfront attendants are a step forward in terms of services provided to the public.
