Department of Education responds to concerns from YK school boards

Yellowknife, NWT – The G.N.W.T’s Department of Education has responded to recent concerns from Yellowknife’s public and catholic schools over funding.

Last week, Education Minister Jackson Lafferty heard from Yk1 chair John Stephenson who says two issues have left his board in a financial crunch.

One of them deals with the board’s share of pensions, agreed to in the latest contract with teachers.

Deputy Minister Gabriela Eggenhofer says it’s simple why the territorial government won’t help to fund that.

“The reason the request was not supported was because the Yk1 and YCS school boards are independent employers that negotiate collective agreements with their employees without any involvement of the G.N.W.T.”

Meanwhile, Eggenhofer says school boards across the territory do have enough funding to roll out junior kindergarten over the next two years.

That’s something called for in the last G.N.W.T budget.

Some school board officials and MLA’s disagree with that stance.
