Deh Cho MLA Nadli pleads guilty to assault causing bodily harm

Deh Cho MLA Michael Nadli has pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm following an incident in his hometown of Fort Providence back on April 7.

Donned in dark pants and a brown coat, the 50-year-old politician entered the plea during a brief court appearance in Yellowknife Thursday.

Few details of the incident have been made public but police say the victim was admitted to the town’s health centre for treatment. Nadli later turned himself into RCMP.

Nadli, who’s been the Deh Cho MLA since 2011, was granted bail two days after charges were laid but was told to abide by a number of conditions.

By entering the plea, Nadli also agreed to be admitted to a Domestic Violence Treatment Option Court (DVTO), though it remains to be seen when.

The DVTO Court is an alternative court that allows people who have used violence against a spouse to accept responsibility for their behaviour and receive counselling.

Sentencing takes place after the successful completion of the program.

Since the allegations, Nadli has given up his position as chairman of the Standing Committee of Government Operations at the legislative assembly.

Convicted or not, the legislature isn’t required to take any action on Nadli. During the most recent sitting, the Deh Cho MLA was absent for three of the seven days.

Nadli is scheduled to make his next court appearance on July 23.
