Former NWT Premier Floyd Roland will be the NWT Conservatives’ candidate in the 2015 federal election.

Roland, currently the mayor of Inuvik, was confirmed as the Conservative candidate for the Northwest Territories riding last week.

He had been the only applicant to express a serious interest in standing for the Conservatives in the NWT. The 53-year-old held the office of Premier from 2007 until 2011, having first entered the legislature as an MLA in 1995.

Roland’s four-year premiership included an extra-marital affair and a vote of no-confidence, which he survived by 10 votes to eight.

In May, Roland told Moose FM: “I’ve got a lot of experience from the grassroots right up to the NWT legislature.

“I retired in 2011 as Premier and, with that history and knowledge of the process of trying to get the message out from the NWT to the rest of Canada, I thought it was time to step in and see what I can do to continue to help us here in the Northwest Territories.”

New Democrat and present NWT MP Dennis Bevington announced earlier this month that he will run for re-election, though his candidature has yet to be rubber-stamped by the territorial NDP.

Gail Cyr and Kieron Testart are in the running for the territory’s Liberal nomination.
