Take a Kid Gardening Program expands in its second year

Yellowknife, NWT – A whole new crop of students in Hay River will get an opportunity to grow and harvest local produce this summer.

That’s according to the G.N.W.T’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment.

In response to the overwhelming success of the hands-on learning opportunity piloted last year, the Take a Kid Gardening Program is expanding this season.

I.T.I Minister David Ramsay says the program supplies materials including seeds, soil, planter boxes and grow lights and works closely with local schools and community members to deliver the programs.

He says the students assemble planter boxes, mix soil, plant seeds and enjoy the fruits of their labour after harvest.

Ramsay says increasing opportunities in agriculture is also one of the ways the G.N.W.T is encouraging regional diversification in the territory.
