N.T.P.C: Hay River no longer operating on diesel-generated power

Yellowknife, NWT – The Northwest Territories Power Corporation says transmission lines from Taltson to Fort Smith, Fort Resolution and Hay River were energized after the G.N.W.T’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources gave them the thumbs-up.

In a news release, N.T.P.C says E.N.R firefighting crews finished performing precautionary controlled fires in the area surrounding the plant early Thursday night and gave the power company the all-clear around 9:30pm.

The switch back to hydro was started immediately and by 10:40pm all three communities were off diesel.

They had been operating on diesel since Sunday night when a wildfire came within close proximity of the power plant.

The power company says staff will continue to closely monitor fires throughout the territory to ensure a continuous supply of power to its customers.
