City of Yellowknife: evacuation due to forest fires “out of the question”

Yellowknife, NWT – The city of Yellowknife says it will only activate its emergency plan in the event that the forest fire season worsens and the city becomes endangered.

Yellowknife’s Director of Public Safety, Dennis Marchiori, says the idea of a city-wide evacuation at this time, is absolutely out of the question.

“We constantly monitor the situation and I would state that an evacuation of the city of Yellowknife is not something we would ever envision, it would be a very difficult task to do. By being so close to large bodies of water, we would implement other measures like setting up pumps and fire breaks to protect the city. At this point in time, there is none of that imminent danger for the city.”

Marchiori says the city is in constant communication with its partners and he encourages residents to monitor www.nwtfire.com for the latest information on fires in the area, and the Department of Transportation’s Twitter handle for up-to-date traffic reports.
