Residents along Highway 3 asked to voluntarily evacuate to Yellowknife amid smoke concerns

Yellowknife, NWT – The G.N.W.T is requesting, as a safety precaution, that residents along Highway Three between Yellowknife and kilometer 300, just past boundary Creek, voluntarily evacuate to Yellowknife where a reception centre has been set up.

Strong winds from the northwest are expected in the city tonight, resulting in heavy smoke and reduced visibility from a fire 30 kilometers west of the Yellowknife.

Officials are currently visiting properties along the highway to advise residents of the risk and to ask them to evacuate to Yellowknife.

Officials stress that the city is not in any immediate danger though fire danger remains extreme throughout the region.
