With fire activity along Snare line, NTPC warns of potential outages

Yellowknife, NWT – The Northwest Territories Power Corporations says there is plenty of fire activity along its Snare transmission line, which could result in power interruptions in a number of communities including Yellowknife.

Communications Manager Pam Coulter with NTPC explains.

“With fires around the line, the smoke, soot and heat that come from those fires produce a gas which is enough of a mass between the wires and the ground to short out the wires. Like your breaker at home, the switch would then be shut off. There’s always the potential for outages when there are fires along the line.”

Coulter says Snare is currently open and using hydro, but says that could change quickly if fire conditions along the line worsen.
