Western Arctic MP: Climate change should top Harper’s northern agenda

Yellowknife, NWT – Western Arctic MP Dennis Bevington says he’d like to see more action from the Prime Minister following his ninth annual northern tour.

Stephen Harper is in Fort Smith Friday where he will make his one and only stop in the Northwest Territories.

Bevington says he’s happy the Prime Minister is here, but hopes he pays close attention to some of the serious challenges northerners face.

“The damage that the forest fires have caused to the region around North Slave is absolutely catastrophic. We’re going to have difficulty with many issues coming out of there over the next year or two. We don’t know what that’s going to do to the caribou migration. I hope the Prime Minister recognizes that we have serious issues with climate change.”

Bevington cited the high cost of living and energy as other challenges.

Harper will travel to Cambridge Bay, Pond Inlet and Iqaluit after Fort Smith.
