Yellowknife, NWT – The Prime Minister announced that his government is prepared to invest up to $4-million to help Northerners grow their own food.
Stephen Harper made the announcement in Fort Smith on Friday as part of his northern tour.
Of the $4-million proposed, $2-million will go towards building a permanent campus for the Northern Farm Training Institute in Hay River.

“The funds will go towards actual implementation, building and infrastructure for a functioning farm that will also be the host site for teaching real practical northern farm food production systems. It will cover crop gardens, animal systems, orchard systems and greenhouse systems among others.”
The Prime Minister also announced roughly $2-million in funding to help design year-round commercial greenhouses for Northern communities.
Harper’s ninth annual northern trip is expected to wrap up Tuesday in Nunavut.
