Snow in Yellowknife, Air Canada & WestJet cancel flights

A number of flights to and from Yellowknife were cancelled on Wednesday as travellers endured a day of snow.

Air Canada issued a snow advisory covering Wednesday and Thursday, saying flights on both days “may be impacted”. Two scheduled Air Canada arrivals from Calgary on Wednesday were cancelled, as were Calgary-bound departures on both Wednesday and Thursday.

WestJet held out for several more hours before issuing a “winter storm system warning”, cancelling flights between Edmonton, Calgary and Yellowknife. Canadian North cancelled Wednesday’s late flight from Edmonton, while First Air also experienced cancellations.

Flight updates: Yellowknife Airport arrivals and departures

As of 7:30pm on Wednesday, the NWT Department of Transportation’s website listed the following cancellations for Thursday:

  • WestJet flight 606 to Calgary, scheduled for 6am
  • Air Canada flight 8226 to Calgary and Edmonton, scheduled for 6:25am

Passengers are strongly advised to contact their airline before travelling to the airport.

According to Environment Canada, periods of snow and blowing snow in Yellowknife are forecast to last until around 3am on Thursday. The agency had initially forecast around 7 cm of snow on Wednesday in total.
