Northern Premiers converge on Yellowknife for annual forum

Yellowknife, NWT – A week after Canada’s Premiers met in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for the Premier’s Conference, the three territorial Premiers were in Yellowknife Thursday for the Northern Premiers Forum.

The meeting is meant to provide the territorial leaders with an opportunity to discuss issues of mutual concern, develop made-in-the-North solutions and promote northern interests.

N.W.T Premier Bob McLeod says they also launched an update to the territories’ Northern Vision, a collaborative report which was originally published in 2007.

“The Northern Vision outlines how our three territories will work together to develop the North as a region, a vibrant healthy community with economies that offer sound investment and diverse employment opportunities, a flourishing private sector and protection of the environment for future generations.”

McLeod says the renewed vision has four pillars: energy, infrastructure, governance and productive and engaged citizens.

Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna confirmed that next year’s Northern Premiers’ Forum will be held somewhere in his territory.
