An official with Det’on Cho Logistics, which provides dispatch services for the Tibbitt to Contwoyto winter road, said the cab of the tanker was ‘fully engulfed’ in flames shortly before 4:00 p.m. local time.

Police and fire personnel were on the scene shortly afterwards.

At around 6:17 p.m., the territory’s Department of Transportation tweeted that the highway had reopened to traffic.

It was previously closed to all traffic just beyond Prosperous Lake, about 20 kilometers out of Yellowknife for about two hours.
