It was a quiet day for Team NWT at the Canada Summer Games yesterday.
Just the one game to keep an eye on, the Northwest Territories Women’s Soccer Team taking on New Brunswick. It wasn’t the closest of soccer games, as New Brunswick came out on top, 7-0.
‘Molly‘
Yellowknife’s Molly Gillard came close to scoring what would have been the Northwest Territories’ only goal of the year. She took a free kick off the cross-bar.
“It would have been really nice to score that goal,” Molly said, post-game. “It was my goal coming into the tournament to score a goal, or to be a part of a goal.”
The Women’s Soccer Team was outscored 30-0 over a 0-4 record, which includes a 1-0 loss to Yukon on Tuesday. Molly described the experience as a learning process.
“You come here and see what the standard is across the country. I know what it takes to be better now, I know that I have to work harder. I’ve been watching these girls and how they move, what they can do. I’m definitely going to try all of their little tricks when I get home.”
The experience wasn’t all about being out-matched though. Gillard says that she now has to make one of the biggest decisions of her life.
“I have a position for me in September to go play in Saskatoon at the [Saskatchewan Soccer’s Regional EXCEL Centre]. I’m not sure if I’ll be taking it yet. I’d have to move away from Yellowknife and all of my friends. It’d be great soccer, though. A great opportunity.”
Gillard says that she puts school above everything, with her goal being to play soccer for a University team.

It’s another quiet day for Team NWT at the Canada Summer Games. It’ll be another Northwest Territories-Yukon match-up, this time in Men’s Basketball.
The Men’s Basketball Team has taken a beating during the tournament. In total, the Team is sitting at a +/- of -207, with a record of 0-4. Despite the final scores of each game, Head Coach Aaron Wells says the team manages to impress everyone with their work ethic.
“The coach of the other team, the other players even, are impressed with our guys’ work ethic. They always tell us after each game. It’s important that we work hard.”

This will be the Men’s Basketball Team’s final game of the tournament.
