City looks to address homelessness with second PiT Count

The City of Yellowknife will be taking part in a National initiative that will hopefully help in the fight against homelessness.

On April 22nd & 23rd, the City will conduct its second Point-in-Time (PiT) Homeless Count. The PiT Count is meant to provide a snapshot of homelessness in Yellowknife. The City says it will “indicate the minimum number of people experiencing homelessness in our community.

The PiT Count will be conducted at the SideDoor Resource Centre, Safe Harbour Day Centre and at the YWCA.

Mayor Mark Heyck commented on the Count, saying homelessness continues to be a major focus.

Addressing homelessness continues to be a priority for Council. The PiT Count provides valuable information to measure changes in homelessness and is a Government of Canada initiative that we want to support.

The YK PiT Count is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy. Through the months of March and April, Canadians suffering from homelessness will be counted in 60 communities across the country in an effort to get a more focused picture of the issue.

If you’d like to take part in volunteering, either with the surveys or serving food, click here. The City says volunteer training will take place on either Monday April 16 or Wednesday April 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
