NWT ice crossings preparing for closures this week

Yellowknife gaming group Ptarmicon is holding their 14th annual gaming and pop culture convention Ptarmicon 2026 this weekend at the Yellowknife Multiplex.

With the NWT Culinary Festival is just around the corner, foodies out and about in Yellowknife are being treated to “Taste Teasers” at the Visitors Centre on 49 Street. Organizers are bringing a taste of a diverse Northern-inspired festival flavours as a sneak peak of this weekend’s main attractions. Tuesday’s teaser? is a Northern rendition of hot wings. In a last minute menu change, Mexican corn, a Turtle Island staple, was moved to Wednesday. 

A black bear sighting in the Northlands neighbourhood of Yellowknife this weekend caught some area local residents off guard. It is unclear what caused the encounter, but experts advise that the public should keep food and food waste in airtight containers to prevent encounters, as bears have a keen sense of smell.

Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson has released a statement on Northern priorities ahead of this week’s meeting of Canada’s Premiers and First Ministers in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Minister Rebecca Alty says changes to the child benefits program came into effect Monday and could bring up to $165 dollars more per year in support for essentials per child. While child advocates agree the government supports remain critical, they say it no longer keeps pace with factors like the rising cost of living.
