Yellowknife’s St. Joseph Middle School will be getting some upgrades.
The freshly appointed Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Caroline Cochrane, and Miles Welsh, Chair of Yellowknife Catholic Schools announced three new classrooms and a new washroom coming to the school.
The additions come after ECE conducted an assessment of all Yellowknife schools, focusing on space for students. According to the Department, the assessment report projected that by 2027 Yellowknife will see an increase of 200 students. The report suggested increasing school capacity across the city over the next five years.
Minister Cochrane said the new modular units are a step forward in increasing space for future students.
“We consistently track enrolments across the Northwest Territories to ensure the needs of students and school communities are met. Increasing enrolments across the city have necessitated a plan to increase structural capacity over the next five years, and the modular classrooms are the first step in addressing these needs.”
Board Chair Welsh echoed Cochrane’s words, adding that it is a priority to ensure YK students have the appropriate facilities where they can learn.
“Ensuring that the children and educational staff of our school district have the appropriate facilities to meet and exceed students’ learning objectives is one of the utmost priorities of Yellowknife Catholic Schools. This added classroom space will not only benefit our students for years to come, but represents strategic infrastructure investment in our community.”

The three classrooms and washroom will cost the GNWT $1.5 million and will be in place for the 2018-19 school year.
