RCMP investigating bear encouter, missing man near Tulita

RCMP are investigating a report of a bear encounter near Tulita, as well as a missing person.

At approximately 7:45 am on August 15th, police received a signal from an emergency communications device located about 50 km south of Tulita, which is only reachable by water or air.

GNWT Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been engaged and travelled to the location with RCMP by helicopter.

A woman reported her travelling partner had an encounter with a bear. The man was then reported missing after the encounter. The woman was later able to make contact with another group that was travelling in the same area.

The group activated their emergency communications device. The woman and the travelling group have been extracted from the area.

RCMP with partner agencies are searching for the missing man and are also investigating the report of the bear encounter.

As this is an ongoing situation, updates will be provided when available.
